meet the staff

Rachel Verlander, Operations Manager

Rachel started at NS in April of 2007 as the office manager after relocating to Arizona from her home-state of Idaho.  At that time it was just her, Dr. Rubin and one other part-time doctor.  The practice grew quickly into the multi-physician and multiple staff member clinic that we all know today.

some of her interests when she isn't at work:
Rachel has been married for 21 years and has 3, almost grown children ages 21, 19 and 17.  When she isn't busy taking care of her family she enjoys English literature, hiking and spending time with friends.

As a member of the NS team what keeps you inspired?  Why do you love coming to work?
"There are so many reasons why I love working at NS - of course our wonderful patients are a huge part of the positive experience everyday - but also the team I get to be a part of, and the difference I know the work done here has made in so many lives.  NS has always had an extremely high set of standards that are displayed in so many ways.  It is a joy and privilege to, each day, be a part of something more important than myself and to see how the power of genuine concern for ones fellow man, put into action, can renew a person's sense of empowerment in their own healthcare choices.  That is what sets NS apart and why I love being allowed to be a part of it."

Tom Pelka, Medical Assistant

Tom has been at Naturopathic Specialists for almost 4 years.  As NS's medical assistant he is the point person for blood draws,  injections and is our lab test expert. Additionally, when he isn't busy helping IV patients or answering questions on the phone you can find Tom at the front desk walking patients through treatment plans and scheduling appointments.

some of his interests when he isn't at work:
Tom enjoys running and spending time outside, in general.  He also likes to travel, take day trips up north and weekend trips to San Diego. And when the summer begins to melt the pavement, as an avid reader, he loves getting lost in a new book.

As a member of the NS team what keeps you inspired? Why do you love coming to work?
"I love coming to work to see the changes that naturopathic medicine produces in people's lives.  I look forward to every work day and there is no better feeling than knowing that I am part of something as special as this practice.

Laura Deprator, RN

if you've ever been in the office for an IV, you have likely spent some time with Laura.  Always ready with a bright smile and a thoughtful word she has been NS's registered nurse since September 2011.  For those of you that have not had the pleasure yet, here is a little bit about another key member of our exceptional NS team.

my biggest role is in caring for the infusion patients; helping to organize and administer their treatments in the clinic. I also help with other clinical aspects of patient care, such as injections and vital signs or helping the doctors in any clinical manner. Patients can also come to me with questions and problems for the doctors and I help to get them addressed.

what are some of your interests when you aren't at work?
when I am not at work, I like to spend my time hiking the nearby mountains, reading books and magazines, spending time with my family and friends. I also dabble a little in creating bead jewelry and gardening. I like most outdoor activities and love finding opportunities to spend time outside. I have one pet, a cat, but love any and all animals.

what keeps you inspired and coming back to work?
there are two simple reasons I love to come to work at NS: the staff and the patients. I am constantly in awe of the strength and spirit our patients show as they battle their health issues. I feel honored to be a part of anyone's health care team and appreciate the trust they place in me to give them good care. I love being a source of information and comfort to anyone in need. And I am honored to work with such a brilliant group of physicians who work hard to give their patients the best care. All the staff in the office work hard, give the patients 100%, and make it a joy to work here, sneaking in moments of fun and laughter.
